Catholic Women's League
History in Petawawa
An organizational meeting was held in St. Luke’s Church on May 2, 1938, at which time the Diocesan president, Mrs. Mulcahy, addressed the group, as did Father Holly, Parish Priest. It was decided to form a branch to be known as the Petawawa Subdivision of the CWL. There were 18 charter members.
The ladies lost no time in getting involved in parish activities. At their first meeting, at a request from Father Holly, they took charge of the annual picnic held by St. Luke’s Church. They also established their practice of holding their meetings on the first Monday of every month.
Over the years, CWL members have continued to be involved in many areas of Parish life, as well as extending a helping hand to others in the community, the province, the nation and, indeed, around the world. They have made countless donations to charities, missions, and individuals. They have hosted conventions, birthday parties for senior citizens, helped with bingo, provided funeral luncheons, served on Diocesan Council, supported seminarians – just to mention a few things.
